Born in 1838 in Bhopal, she was the daughter of Nawab Sikandar Begum, who was a prominent ruler of Bhopal during her time. Her full name was Shahjahan Begum, but she is often referred to as the Nawab Begum of Bhopal due to her political role. Shahjahan Begum ascended to the throne of Bhopal at the tender age of six, following the death of her father, and served as a ruler of the princely state in two non-consecutive terms: from 1844 to 1860, and then again from 1868 until her death in 1901.
