Today, I want to share a personal observation from a recent outing: I saw a mom and her kids on the street with handmade signs reading “Money for Nationals”, asking passersby to donate just like beggars. Typically, breaking out a lemonade stand or washing cars to raise funds is totally fine—and even wholesome. But this setup felt different... and I want to talk about why.

Back in the day, kids washing cars, holding lemonade stands, or selling baked goods would set their goal, exchange value—lemonade for quarters. It was entrepreneurship, earnest effort, and community spirit.

In contrast, what I saw was static signs, an open request for donations with no activity or direct engagement—closer to begging than fundraising.

Without a service or product, it blurred the line between working for money and expecting it unconditionally.

Research into child begging shows that presenting a scenario where kids simply "need money" can exploit sympathy without contributing real effort.
Instead of empowering children, it risks promoting a sense of entitlement or teaching reliance on unsolicited aid.

Fundraising with effort, creativity, and exchange is meaningful—it builds confidence and community.

Holding up a sign without activity? It fails to teach skills or work ethic, and veers into emotional manipulation.

It’s crucial to equip children with grassroots methods—lemonade, crafts, services—not station them with signs expecting money.

Join me as I unpack this on-camera moment, dive into what healthy, age-appropriate fundraising looks like, and ask: Is it support—or just entitlement? Let’s discuss.
