The Fall of a Mighty Nation: The Story of Prophet Hud (AS) & the People of ‘Ad
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 92th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, The Fall of a Mighty Nation: The Story of Prophet Hud (AS) & the People of ‘Ad
The story of Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) and the people of ‘Ad is referenced briefly in Surah Al-Anum (6:41–43), yet it carries deep spiritual and moral implications. Prophet Hud was sent to the powerful and wealthy tribe of ‘Ad, who lived in the region known as al-Ahqaf, situated between Yemen and Oman. They were known for their might, impressive architecture, and vast lands, and they prided themselves on their strength and dominance. However, their arrogance led them away from the worship of Allah and into a life of polytheism, injustice, and moral corruption. When Prophet H?d was sent to them as a warner, calling them back to the worship of the One true God, they arrogantly rejected his message. They mocked him, accused him of madness, and demanded that he bring the punishment he threatened if he was truly a messenger. The verses in Surah Al-An??m echo the broader Qur’anic narrative of H?d and his people, focusing on the pattern of rejection and divine retribution that characterizes many of the prophetic stories.
In verse 41, Allah challenges the polytheists by asking: *“Say, ‘Who rescues you from the darkness of the land and sea \[when] you call upon Him imploring aloud and privately, ‘If He should save us from this \[crisis], we will surely be among the thankful.’”* This verse points to the natural human inclination to call upon Allah in moments of desperation, even if one otherwise associates partners with Him. It reflects the condition of the people of ‘?d, who, like many other nations, turned to Allah in times of hardship but quickly returned to arrogance and disbelief once their situation improved. Prophet H?d urged his people to recognize this contradiction and to turn to Allah with sincerity and humility, but their hearts remained hardened. They could not see beyond their worldly power and prosperity, thinking they were invincible and beyond accountability.
The following verse, 6:42, states: *“Say, ‘It is Allah who saves you from it and from every distress; then you \[still] associate others with Him.’”* This illustrates the root of the problem with the people of ‘?d—their ingratitude and association of partners with Allah. Even though they experienced Allah’s mercy and deliverance during times of crisis, they failed to reflect on it and continued in their false beliefs and corrupt ways. Prophet H?d's message was not only a theological argument but also a call to morality, justice, and humility. He reminded his people that all power belongs to Allah and that human strength is fleeting and insignificant without divine support. Despite the clarity of his message and the sincerity of his appeal, the people of ‘?d remained defiant, clinging to their idols and mocking the very idea that their might could ever be challenged.
Verse 43 gives a profound insight into their mindset and the spiritual disease that afflicted them: *“But why, when Our punishment came to them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts became hardened, and Satan made attractive to them that which they were doing.”* This verse highlights a tragic spiritual truth: when people become deeply entrenched in arrogance and sin, even suffering does not lead them to humility. The people of ‘?d were given opportunities to reflect and repent, yet they chose pride over submission. Their refusal to humble themselves, even when faced with signs of divine punishment, sealed their fate. Their destruction came in the form of a violent and relentless wind, as described in other parts of the Qur’an, such as Surah Al-Haqqah and Surah Al-Ahqaf. The wind lasted for seven nights and eight days, uprooting them and leaving them lifeless as though they were hollow trunks of fallen palm trees.
The story of Prophet Hud and the people of ‘?d serves as a powerful warning to all who allow power, wealth, and status to blind them to the truth. It teaches that material success is not a sign of divine favor if it is not accompanied by gratitude, humility, and righteousness. The people of ‘?d were not destroyed because they were ignorant or weak, but because they were arrogant and willfully defiant. The brief but potent reference in Surah Al-Anum reminds believers that divine warnings should never be taken lightly. It also underscores the mercy of Allah, who sends prophets with clear signs and ample opportunities for people to change. Yet, if these are ignored, divine justice eventually follows.
In summary, the story of Prophet H?d and the people of ‘Ad, as touched upon in Surah Al-Anum, reflects the universal pattern of guidance, rejection, and consequence. Their legacy is not one of glory, but of ruin—a once-mighty nation brought down by its own arrogance and disbelief. This serves as an enduring lesson for humanity: that true strength lies not in worldly power, but in submission to Allah, and that ignoring His signs leads not to success, but to destruction.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
