RetroInspection - Zorro - pt. 3

Written at a time when Mexican and American relations were, at the very least, in flux, but also at a time when the memory of the chase of Pancho Villa by US troops was fresh in the minds of both citizenries of the North American countries, Johnston McCulley could have easily taken a completely pro American slant with the character of Zorro.
Instead, McCulley embraced much of the ideology espoused that supported the Mexican Revolution by creating a noble hero for the people in Zorro. Public sympathies would likely have appreciated a character who was more American than Mexican, but both audiences found sympathy with a man who fought for those who could not fight for themselves.
The results of his work surprised McCulley and attracted Hollywood. The hero nature of Zorro endures to today.
