Ruskan was the primary person triaging flood victims among 12 rescue helicopters.

New Jersey Coast Guard swimmer Scott Ruskan is being hailed as a hero for his efforts to rescue dozens of people in the devastating floods at Camp Mystic.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised Ruskan on X, calling him an "American Hero."

In the chaotic aftermath of the devastating floods at Camp Mystic on the Guadalupe River, Scott Ruskan, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer, is credited with saving 165 people in what was marked as his very first rescue operation.

“I got on scene, boots on the ground at Camp Mystic and discovered I was the only first responder there.”

“I had about 200 kids, mostly all scared, terrified cold, having probably the worst day of their life.”

“I just kind of need to triage them, get them to a higher level care and get them off the flood zone with a lot of the Army helicopters.”

Ruskan credited Coast Guard members Lt. Ian Hopper, Lt. Blair Ogujiofor, and AMT3 Seth Reeves
