In 1987 and 2025, the Guadalupe River in Texas flooded after sudden July storms, each time causing deadly surges.

Both floods followed intense, localized rainfall that hit the same region, overwhelming the river with little warning.

Both times, youth camps were hit. Teens at Pot O’ Gold in 1987 and campers at Camp Mystic in 2025 were caught in the flood. Many were swept away.
