"When you let go of the grasping mind, you realize that there is nothing to hold on to and nothing to push away."
-Zen Master Huang Bo Xion in the Zen Teachings of Huang Po

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
This is a great teaching from the Zen tradition talking about how we relate to things in the world. Normally we attach to things. We think things are very serious, very important, our opinions, our views of things, our relationship with things or people, or even ideas. This is called the grasping mind, the mind that grasps at things or phenomena or ideas as being real, as being ultimately, you could say, important. And what this Zen master is saying is if it's possible for us to let go of this kind of approach, if we can soften our mind, not take things so seriously and so solidly, then we realize nothing needs to be held on to or let go of or pushed away. We can approach everything in a very fresh, spontaneous, natural, and healthy way, a way of mind that will not encounter suffering, meaning, worries, anxieties, stress, or conflict of any kind. Letting go of the grasping mind, as the Zen master says, is the way to heal ourselves and our relationship with the world.
