The Pythagorean Theory of Music and Color

The Pythagoreans were a mystical philosophical school founded by Pythagoras of Samos around the 6th century BCE. Though often remembered for mathematics—especially the theorem bearing his name—Pythagoras and his followers saw numbers not just as tools for measurement, but as divine principles that governed the entire universe. To the Pythagoreans, music was the audible expression of cosmic order. They believed that the movements of the stars and planets created a kind of silent symphony—a “music of the spheres”—and that harmony in sound reflected harmony in the soul and in the cosmos. Similarly, they viewed color as a visible vibration, a frequency of light mirroring the same laws that structure musical scales. For the Pythagoreans, both music and color were bridges between the material and spiritual worlds—vibrational patterns through which the soul could attune itself to the divine order.
