Russia-Azerbaijan Tensions Escalate — Retaliatory Arrests and Brutality on Both Sides

Footage shows Russian IT specialists and employees of Sputnik beaten up in Azerbaijan. They were charged with serious crimes — cyber offenses and drug-related charges.

This is a response to raids on Azerbaijani businesses in Yekaterinburg, where 50 people were detained. Brothers Safarov — Ziyodin and Hussein — died during the arrest. Several others were injured and hospitalized. The Investigative Committee claimed one brother died from a heart attack; nothing was said about the second — silence reigned. The bodies were handed over to Azerbaijan.

An autopsy conducted there showed no signs of heart problems. According to Azerbaijani authorities, both brothers had been beaten to death.

Azerbaijanis took offense and began arbitrarily detaining Russians wherever they could find them, pressuring them hard. An eye for an eye approach kicked in.

I think that’s where it will end — those who ended up in prison, or at least some of them, will be exchanged. At the political level, it has gone as far as a diplomatic note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — no further.
