This is the first Bluetooth speaker of this type I have reviewed in quite a while, and if this is typical of the 2025 market, then not too much has changed. I should say that the specifications in this review are taken from the product box and user guide and differ from those listed on the Amazon product page.
Inside the attractive mid-market product box which was the 25 x 10 x 11 cm speaker itself, a short USB-A to USB-C charging cable, and a well written and easy to read User Guide. Build quality all seems excellent and I have to say this product has quite an upmarket feel to it for the budget price.
The speaker is chunky in design and reassuringly weighty, giving the feel of a quality, well made product. On top is an oversized control panel with buttons for On/Off/Pairing Reset, Next/Vol Up, Previous/Vol Down, Play/Pause, and Light Mode. On either end is the flexible bass port. I am not sure if this actually does anything, but it looks quite good and, I suppose, is a selling point. There are two front facing 6.6cm speakers outputting 8w each (although the Amazon the product page claims a total output of 24W). On the bottom is a flattened and outlined stand, although the speaker is not particularly stable even on a flat surface. On top is a large, flexible handle with a rubber grip. On the rear is a large grommet protected bay containing just the USB-C port, which, so far as I know, is for charging only.
I have to say I find the button design annoying. The two large plus and minus buttons are large, stand proud of the surface and are easy to locate by sight and by touch. Not so the other buttons, which are black on black very slightly recessed and hard to see and feel.
One of the main selling points for the speaker must be the lighting display. This is controlled by the lighting button, keep pressing to scroll through the 7 static colours, and to switch off. There are also multiple other scrolling and breathing modes which seem to follow on pretty much at random. This display is attractive, not much too in your face, and can be turned off. Many people may like it, although it is not my thing.
The speaker uses Bluetooth 5.3 which made pairing to my phone easy enough and I had no problems connecting to other devices later. There is no NFC option nor can the device connect to two Bluetooth devices at once. When rebooting the speaker connected automatically and speedily finds my phone with voice status updates for connection.
The sound quality is first-rate for the small size with plenty of volume and plenty of good powerful bass. For the size, the sound is loud, clear and resonant enough to be heard when on the beach or outside in noisy situations. This speaker is designed for outdoor use and is IP6 rated, which means it should be fine in the rain and is protected against prolonged splashes but not immersion in water. It features a microphone and can be used to receive calls, but this I have not tried nor am I likely to.
The device is charged via the USB-C port in the access panel with a LED charging status display. The 4000 mAh rechargeable Lithium battery seems powerful enough but it is a pity there is no power out port to allow the device to charge or power external devices. However, the claims for 24 hour usage per charge may not be too far from the mark as battery life for me does seem excellent.
Compared to many rivals this device is short on features, lacking as it does FM radio, SD Card, NFC, AptX, and even an audio in/out jack port, all of which can be found in many rival devices. In the end, Matast decided to put the emphasis on sound quality and quality construction. For me, this is more important for what I want from a Bluetooth speaker and makes the device still a worthwhile buy for both outdoor and indoor use.
