Once We Were

I found your jacket yesterday,
Still smells like those lost summer days.
We were young, the world felt wide,
With nowhere to go but side by side.

Late-night talks and silent skies,
You held the stars in your eyes.
Now they flicker in my dreams,
In quiet moments, in gentle beams.

'Cause once we were a fire, burning bright,
A story written in the softest light.
Time moved on, but not my heart—
You're still the ending, the missing part.
I close my eyes and there you are,
A memory, but never far.

The swing still creaks in the old backyard,
Where you first whispered, “Don’t go far.”
I laughed, not knowing that someday,
That’s all I’d have—what slipped away.

People fade but moments stay,
Like songs we sang that never fray.
And though your voice has turned to mist,
It lingers still—like every kiss.

'Cause once we were the best of time,
A poem without a broken rhyme.
Now all that’s left is bittersweet,
A shadow dancing through the heat.
You’re gone, but not beyond my reach—
You live in everything you teach.

Once we were... and always will be,
A chapter etched inside of me.
