Howdy! Today we will dive into some of the more obscure history and legends involving the London Guildhall. This structure, which is home to the Corporation of London, has stood for nearly 600 years (albeit being heavily damaged multiple times). Yet, the esoteric history involving the Guildhall is also worth a deeper dive.

For the great judicial processes of London have been centered within a form of guildhall from the first royal charter by William the Conquerer, and yet the foundations of the London Guildhall are also shrouded in mystery. Rather recently (in 1988) during excavations beneath The Guildhall, it was discovered that the Roman London Amphitheater, the largest in all of Britain, once existed on this location. Furthermore, the Amphitheater and much of London, according to myth and legend, were founded by Brutus of Troy.

In this fantastical tale, Brutus arrives in London, finding the landscape occupied by Giants, led by Gog and Magog. Brutus then defeats, or employs the Giants, using them to construct the first rendition of the city of London. As remarkable as this myth is, we have evidence that suggests there may be a bit more truth to this legend than you might expect. Today we will dive into all of these awesome legends, while also looking through some incredible images of the London Guildhall from past and present. Enjoy!
