"All worldly pursuits have but one inevitable end, which is sorrow. Acquisitions end in dispersion, buildings in destruction, meetings in separation, birth in death."
-Milarepa in the 100,000 Songs of Milarepa.

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Milarepa was a great yogi in Tibet and he was a renunciate. He left worldly affairs behind to focus and concentrate very one-pointedly in meditation, away from worldly distractions. Here, Milarepa is reiterating a very common theme in Buddhism, which is, again, about impermanence, the fact that nothing lasts, that we cannot and really should not pin our hopes and expectations on things of the world, because the world is impermanent and everything in it, things that are born, including ourselves and our loved ones, will die when we meet. Our loved ones or things we enjoy, at some point we part from them. If something is constructed, eventually it will break down or fall apart and everything that we accumulate or grasp, ultimately we have to let go of. This is not a punishment. This is not negative. It's a perspective that is very wise, very broad, and very honest. Buddhism is not trying to be depressing, but it is telling us the truth, which is designed to be very sobering, to wake us up to the reality of things. So we don't live in a fantasy world. We don't live in la-la land or a world of make-believe. It's about becoming awake and, you could say, spiritually mature beings that are seeing things in the true light of what they are, we can enjoy our world. We just don't need to be attached to it or have unrealistic expectations.
