In October 2020, Gregory Rice—the father of Jackson’s four children—was reported missing. His body was later discovered in the Little Pee Dee River, wrapped in a tarp and weighed down with cinder blocks. He had been shot multiple times.

Investigators linked the murder to Meagan Jackson and her lover, Christopher Dontell, a deputy coroner at the time. Surveillance footage, cell phone data, and witness testimony revealed a conspiracy between the two. Dontell eventually pleaded guilty to conspiracy and accessory after the fact, agreeing to testify against Jackson in exchange for a reduced sentence.

During the trial, disturbing details emerged, including allegations of child neglect and abuse by Jackson, and testimony from her daughter about the toxic family environment and Jackson’s affair with Dontell. Dontell testified that Jackson shot Rice and forced him to help dispose of the body, claiming he feared for his life if he didn’t comply.

After a swift deliberation, the jury found Jackson guilty of murder. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Dontell’s sentencing is pending.
