Defund Planned Parenthood

The administration of Donald Trump has signed an order eliminating nearly $1 billion in federal funding allocated to Planned Parenthood.

This measure, described as “existential” by the organization’s president, Alexis McGill Johnson, threatens to shut down nearly 200 clinics that provide abortions.

The cuts mainly target funding from the Title X program, which since 1970 has financed family planning services such as contraceptives and testing for sexually transmitted infections for low-income individuals.

The Trump administration froze $27.5 million in Title X grants to nine Planned Parenthood affiliates, affecting more than 300 centers that provided 1.5 million visits in 2023.

The measure aligns with the conservative agenda to reduce access to abortion services, although federal funds have already been restricted for this purpose since 1977 under the Hyde Amendment.

Planned Parenthood, which receives a third of its income from government funds according to its 2022–2023 annual report, now faces an uncertain future. Rebecca Gibron, director of a six-state affiliate, told TIME that the loss of $3 million annually in her region “will limit access to contraceptives and essential testing.”

The move aims to appease Trump’s anti-abortion base, as outlined in Project 2025, which advocates for excluding abortion-providing clinics from federal funding.

The Supreme Court has also played a key role. In June 2025, it ruled in favor of South Carolina, allowing states to cut off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood—a decision that could inspire other Republican-led states to follow suit.

This precedent, combined with President Trump’s executive action, increases the pressure on the organization. The impact of these cuts will be most severe in rural areas and low-income communities, where Planned Parenthood is often the only provider of reproductive health services.

However, for us pro-lifers, this is a long-awaited victory in the fight to defund the “abortion industry.”

This is only the beginning. The legal and political battle will undoubtedly continue.
