"To give your sheep or cow a large, spacious meadow is the best way to control him."
-Shunryu Suzuki, in the book Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Shinruz Suzuki, great Zen master, originally from Japan but settling in California in the 1960s, was a very influential teacher who inspired and offered authentic Zen to Americans, and in this book, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, he keeps things very simple and straightforward. Here he is telling us that the way to work with the mind is to not try to control it and restrict it too much. Buddhism is famous as the middle path, the middle way. It means we don't just do anything and we don't also try to be too controlling. So he's using a metaphor here of if we have an animal and we want it to feel to not run away or feel claustrophobic, it's to give it a lot of room, a lot of respect. We need to treat our mind in the same way. Give our mind, allow our mind to be spacious and relaxed, and yet there's still guidelines. There's still a fence around this Meadow. There is still some ethical boundaries. There is a sense of right and wrong, but we can be relaxed about this. This is a wonderful approach and insight from. Suzuki Roshi.
