The Madre Fire in San Luis Obispo County, California, has rapidly grown to over 52,000 acres, becoming the state’s largest wildfire of 2025.

Evacuation orders are in effect as the fire threatens structures and sends smoke across southern California.

Fueled by hot, dry conditions ahead of the July Fourth holiday, the blaze is only 10% contained and is one of several burning statewide, Axios has reported.

Officials warn of widespread smoke impacts and urge residents to avoid fireworks, which have caused over $35 million in damage and over 1,200 fires in 2024 alone.
