These organisms are part of the Chordata phylum, which includes all animals with dorsal nerve cords and notochords, making them distant relatives of vertebrates.
In Japan and Korea, certain species of sea squirts, like the sea pineapple (Halocynthia roretzi), are cultivated and consumed as a delicacy, with production peaking at over 42,000 tons in 1994 before declining due to mass mortality events.
