Week 23 Readings of our 2025 Chronological Bible-in-a-Year Reading Challenge bring us to a monumental moment in the history of God’s Old Covenant people: the destruction and demise of the northern kingdom of Israel, aka Ephraim/Samaria.

In this tutorial, Chad Mansbridge explains that while on one hand this destruction was a very physical thing—performed by the military might of the Assyrians in 722BC—it was also deeply spiritual and covenantal. As foretold by the prophets Amos, Micah and Isaiah, and summed up succinctly in the narrative of 2 Kings 17, God Himself was behind Israel's downfall.

As with Adam and Eve in the Garden, Yahweh was taking the 10 northern tribes and ‘casting them from His presence’. The dreaded ‘Day of the Lord’ was upon them.

Despite all the doom and gloom in the prophets this week, there are hints of hope—promises of a future restoration of Israel under the leadership of a Shepherd-King from the line of David, one born in Bethlehem, shining a light in Galilee, who will rebuild David’s fallen tent and return God’s people to a place of dignity and influence among the nations.
