Resident Evil 7: Part 6

This has become one of my favorite villain introductions. It's clear right off the bat that something is incredibly wrong with these people. Knowing Resident Evil, they were probably unknowingly experimented on and became what they are now. This encounter is disturbing as Jack both cuts off the arm of his...son? and then proceeds to torture Ethan after Ethan refuses to eat their food.

My video game brain immediately recognized that these are the bosses of this game that will all eventually need to be taken down. At first I thought the wife and son would come first, and Jack would be the final boss. That's when I noticed the scariest character in the room...the grandma...sitting there as if dead. She will definitely be the last one in the family to go down.

What proceeds from this scene is a game of cat and mouse with Jack. Jack, the wife, and son leave for various reasons, which leaves Ethan along with the Grandma who doesn't do anything but is still creepy.

I cannot overstate how vulnerable you feel at this point in the game. You don't even have a knife, and the constant sound of Jack searching for you makes for an extremely stressful game environment. As I've stated before, in horror games, setting, atmosphere, monster design and jump scares can only get you so far when it comes to making the player feel fear. What really produces fear is vulnerability. The thought that if Jack catches you, you're screwed and there's nothing you can do about it.
