In the 1943 Warner Bros. cartoon Super-Rabbit, Bugs Bunny loses his superpowers when his carrots fall to the ground. After landing, he sees his chewed-up carrots, eaten by Smith and his horse-turned-superhero. Bugs looks at the camera and quips, “This looks like a job for a REAL Superman!” He ducks into a phone booth as Smith and the horse prepare to attack. But when the booth opens, they snap to attention and salute. Why? Bugs emerges in a sharp Marine Corps uniform, singing the Marines’ Hymn! He dismisses the duo, saying he has “important work to do,” and marches off to “Berlin, Tokyo, and points East.”

The Marine Corps loved this tribute so much that they enlisted Bugs Bunny as an honorary Marine Private. By the end of WWII, he was discharged as a Master Sergeant! The title of Honorary Marine is a special honor given by the USMC to select individuals—or in this case, rabbits.
