More info on the creature: Bizarre deep-sea creature shifts its form near the ocean floor at over 3,700 feet. Captured by ROV... The creature in the video is the Halitrephes maasi, commonly known as the firework jellyfish.
It is a deep-sea hydrozoan belonging to the family Halicreatidae.
Sightings of Halitrephes maasi have been reported at depths of 4,000 to 5,000 feet (1,200 to 1,500 meters) near the Revillagigedo Archipelago off the Baja California Peninsula.
The firework jellyfish is known for its bioluminescent display, which resembles a burst of fireworks, hence its common name.
It inhabits the cold, dark waters of the mesopelagic to bathypelagic zones, where sunlight does not penetrate.
Halitrephes maasi is a carnivore, feeding on small marine organisms such as plankton, small fish, and other gelatinous zooplankton.
The discovery of this species has contributed to the understanding of deep-sea biodiversity and the role of bioluminescence in marine ecosystems.
