Will Critics Give Shakur Stevenson Credit if He Dominates William Zepeda?

Shakur Stevenson will fight William Zepeda next weekend, July 12th. Shakur is looking for his statement fight, so to speak, in the 135lb division.

We won't have to worry about William Zepeda pulling out of the fight, accusing Shakur of poisoning him, or planting drugs in his car. Nor will we have to worry about Zepeda accusing Shakur of having SWAT come to his house at 3:00 a.m.

Oscar Dela Hoya and Stevenson detractors are calling this fight a bad matchup for Shakur. Why? William Zepeda is all gas and no brakes. He's a straight-line, come-forward fighter with no defense.

If Shakur picks Zepeda apart, critics will say Shakur wasn't tested enough. They will say Zepeda was too one-dimensional. In other words, they will move the goal post.

This happens in boxing media when the critics don't get the outcome they were hoping for. I see it happen with Terence Crawford and other black fighters who are not on the popularity list.

This could be why fighters like Tank Davis, Terence Crawford, Devin Haney, and Shakur Stevenson have a hard time trusting the media. New Media is a joke—it's worse than legacy media.

New media are a bunch of male groupies with platforms, bigging up their favorite fighter, while defecating on the fighters that they don't like. And they do it in the name of journalism.

Today's media coverage is about clicks and views. It's about a** kissing. It's not about saying the right thing, but more about saying what's popular to appease a popular opinion.

There is no difference between old and new media; they're all the same. There is only the illusion of being different. Shakur has to fight his fight while entertaining the audience.

I foresee Shakur spectacularly winning this fight. Zepeda has no defense, and he's too easy to hit. If Shakur defeats Zepeda, will his critics move the goalposts the way they did Floyd Mayweather and Terence Crawford?

Or do you think the critics will give Shakur Stevenson a fair shake?
