My name is Jethro Tull, and no, I’m not a rock band—that came much later. I was a real person who lived in England in the late 1600s and early 1700s, and I helped kick off what people now call the Agricultural Revolution. That might not sound exciting at first, but trust me—what I did helped feed a growing population and changed the way farming worked forever.
I wasn’t born into a farming family. In fact, I studied law at Oxford. But when I got sick, I had to stop and move to the countryside. That’s where I began paying close attention to how people worked the land. And what I saw didn’t impress me. Farmers were doing things the way their great-grandparents had done—tossing seeds onto plowed soil and hoping they’d grow. It was wasteful, slow, and not very efficient. I thought to myself, There has to be a better way.
So I built one. Around 1701, I invented something called the seed drill. It was a simple machine pulled by a horse that planted seeds neatly in rows, at the right depth and spacing. This meant more crops could grow with fewer seeds, and it saved farmers a ton of time. At first, people laughed at it. But once they saw how well it worked, they started using it all over England—and eventually, across Europe.
I didn’t stop there. I also believed in using horses instead of oxen for plowing, because they were faster and more efficient. I wrote a book called “Horse-Hoeing Husbandry,” where I explained my farming ideas. I wanted people to see that agriculture could be scientific, not just traditional.
Now, I didn’t invent farming—but I helped turn it into something smarter, cleaner, and more productive. And while I didn’t get rich or super famous during my lifetime, my ideas inspired future inventors and helped feed a world that was growing fast.
So if there’s anything I want you to remember from my story, it’s this: even something as old as farming can be transformed by asking questions, trying new things, and not being afraid to fail. Sometimes, all it takes to change the world is a fresh idea and a little courage to plant it.
