Miami, FL, July 1, 2025 — President Donald Trump on Tuesday officially opened the nation’s largest migrant detention center—nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz”—deep in the Everglades west of Miami. The 3,000-bed facility, surrounded by swampland and guarded by Florida National Guard troops, marks a major escalation in the Trump administration’s effort to fast-track deportations and restore control over the southern border.

“Worst of the worst always first, and I think it’s great government what we’ve done,” Trump said upon arrival, flanked by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Built in just eight days on a remote former airfield in Miami–Dade County, the facility will cost $450 million annually and was authorized under DeSantis’s emergency order. Florida’s National Guard members are now deputized as immigration judges, and migrants will face hearings within 48 hours, according to state officials.

“They don’t have to come here,” Noem warned. “If they self-deport and go home, they can come back legally. But if we bring you to this facility, you don’t ever get to come back to America.”

Reporters noted that the site is surrounded by natural barriers—including alligators and invasive pythons—which officials say help deter escape attempts. When asked whether he would consider deploying alligators to the Rio Grande, Trump smirked but gave no direct response.

DeSantis said the center will serve as a national model, offering swift legal processing, medical care, and secure housing for detainees awaiting removal. Noem echoed that sentiment, encouraging other governors to follow Florida’s lead.
