In December 2022, scientists at the National Ignition Facility achieved a historic breakthrough in fusion energy research by generating more energy (3.15 megajoules) than was used to power their lasers (2.05 megajoules) - the first demonstration of net energy gain in controlled fusion. This momentous achievement validated decades of theoretical work and computational modeling, despite lasting less than a billionth of a second. The breakthrough has catalyzed tremendous momentum in fusion research worldwide, with China's EAST reactor maintaining fusion for a record 1,056 seconds and private companies attracting over $5 billion in investment. Microsoft even signed the first commercial fusion power purchase agreement with Helion Energy for electricity beginning in 2028.

Despite this progress, significant challenges remain before fusion can contribute to the power grid. These include developing materials that can withstand extreme conditions, solving the tritium fuel breeding problem, and controlling plasma instabilities. If these obstacles can be overcome, fusion offers remarkable benefits: virtually limitless fuel from seawater, no long-lived radioactive waste, and zero-carbon energy that could power everything from electricity generation to desalination and industrial processes. The question has shifted from whether fusion energy will be achieved to when and by whom.
