He feared touching the light only to be thrust back into darkness, feared even more that ending this endless wait would reveal it as his own delusion. Julian Veyr’s hand paused mid-air, chopsticks hovering, the palace silent save for the flickering candlelight dancing across Noir Marek’s face. For the first time, Julian Veyr saw something like sorrow in his eyes, as if the ice encasing him cracked, each melting drop resembling a tear. “What do you fear?” Julian Veyr’s heart twinged, not with pain but a sour unease. Setting down his chopsticks, he looked at Noir Marek earnestly. From childhood, he’d never known how to be gentle, yet somehow, he was willing to pour all his patience into this quiet, somewhat foolish shadow guard, wanting to erase the self-loathing in his gaze. Noir Marek shook his head, silent.

Perhaps the candlelight was too dazzling, but as Noir Marek gazed at the godlike, handsome man beside him, mist clouded his eyes. His Sovereign was within reach, yet his heart felt separated by a thousand mountains and rivers. He dared not risk voicing the depths of his soul, fearing the cost of a moment’s impulse. Questions like “Kael Lan, is it you? Why don’t you remember me?” swirled at the edge of his lips, only to be swallowed back into his heart. Seeing no response, Julian Veyr didn’t press. Adults all have secrets. They finished dinner in silence, Julian Veyr leaving the palace to Noir Marek, retiring to the secondary hall.
