As of late June 2025, the declared candidates running for Los Angeles County Sheriff in the 2026 election are:
Robert Luna: The incumbent sheriff, who was elected in 2022, plans to seek reelection. He previously served as the Chief of the Long Beach Police Department.
Oscar Martinez: A lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department assigned to the Palmdale station, announced his intention to challenge Sheriff Luna. He is a 16-year veteran of the department and a former US Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Important Notes:
The Los Angeles County Sheriff election is scheduled for June 2, 2026.
The candidate nomination filing period will not begin until February 2026.
Other candidates may announce their campaigns as the election approaches.
The election is officially nonpartisan, meaning candidates' party affiliations will not appear on the ballot.
Martinez is a registered Republican, while Luna is a Democrat. However, Martinez has stated that he doesn't believe party affiliation will matter in the nonpartisan race and is focused on public safety.
