Thousands of drivers were stranded overnight for more than eight hours on a rural stretch of the West Virginia Turnpike after a mudslide blocked northbound lanes near Charleston.

Heavy rains clogged a storm drain, flooding the highway and backing traffic up 12 miles with no detours in place.

The Parkways Authority admitted failing to reroute traffic and promised policy changes.

Though no injuries were reported, motorists were left without food, water, or information, CBS News has reported.

Governor Patrick Morrisey called the situation unacceptable and ordered an investigation.
