Billy the Kid brought to life using AI
"Billy the Kid" (September 17 or November 23, 1859 – July 14, 1881)
Henry McCarty, also known as William H. Bonney, was an infamous American outlaw and gunfighter from the Old West. He was tied to nine murders—four of which he did on his own, and five where he might have been involved with others. He’s also remembered for his role in the Lincoln County War in New Mexico.
McCarty lost his parents when he was just 15. At 16, he got arrested for stealing food in 1875. Just ten days later, he robbed a Chinese laundry and got caught again but managed to escape shortly after. He then ran from New Mexico into Arizona, turning himself into an outlaw and a federal fugitive. In 1877, he started going by the name "William H. Bonney."
After he killed a blacksmith in August 1877, Bonney became a wanted man in Arizona and went back to New Mexico, where he teamed up with some cattle rustlers. He became pretty well-known when he joined the Regulators during the Lincoln County War in 1878. He and a couple of other Regulators were later charged with killing three guys, including Sheriff William J. Brady and one of his deputies.
Bonney's fame really took off in December 1880 when the Las Vegas Gazette in New Mexico and The Sun in New York City published stories about his crimes. Sheriff Pat Garrett caught Bonney later that month. In April 1881, he went to trial for Brady's murder, got convicted, and was sentenced to hang in May. He broke out of jail on April 28, taking out two sheriff's deputies in the process, and managed to stay on the run for over two months. Garrett ultimately shot and killed Bonney, who was only 21, in Fort Sumner on July 14, 1881.
After he died, legends popped up that Bonney had survived, and quite a few guys claimed to be him. Billy the Kid has become one of the most notorious figures from that time, and his life has been dramatized a ton in Western pop culture. He’s appeared in over 50 movies and several TV shows.
