In this episode of Behind the Lines, we break down the Department of Justice’s redlining case against Fairway Independent Mortgage, revealing how digital-era discrimination still locks out entire communities from fair lending.

🚨 What did Fairway do?

📍 Failed to maintain a single branch in majority-Black and Latino neighborhoods
📣 Did not engage in meaningful outreach or marketing to underserved communities
👥 Employed no loan officers focused on diverse areas
📉 Approved significantly fewer loans in communities of color—despite market demand

This wasn’t an oversight. It was systemic and sustained.

⚖️ What was the outcome?
In 2023, Fairway entered into a consent order with the DOJ, agreeing to:

💰 Invest $4 million in loan subsidies and outreach in impacted neighborhoods
📊 Implement new oversight, fair lending training, and compliance systems
🏘️ Increase lending access and presence in underserved communities
🕵🏽 Submit to DOJ monitoring to ensure real change

🧱 Why it still matters:
Modern redlining doesn’t always wear a hood. Sometimes it wears a suit—and hides behind algorithms, policies, or silence.
This case proves that exclusion is still happening, and we have to keep the pressure on.
