Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
This may seem like a very grim statement. We don't want to think of ourselves as being on a boat that's going to go sink in the ocean, and yet, Suzuki Roshi is in a actually a humorous way, is reminding us that, yeah, we are floating along in this world and it's going to come to an end as all things do, and we can even approach this with a bit of humor. So, we sail gracefully and live our lives, and we are not naive. It will not last forever. So life is a precious thing.
