On the 9th of August 1993, Alexander Kvitnitsky and several other Ukrainian tourists were paddling on the Snezhnaya River in the Khamar Daban mountain range of southern Russia when they came across a very strange scene. A young girl stood on the northern side of the river, screaming and waving her arms, desperately pleading with them to save her. With little hesitation, Alexander and the others made for the shore, at which point the girl buried her head into the chest of one of her rescuers and began to tell an incoherent, panicked story of death and terror high up in the mountains above. As the tourists turned rescue squad would come to learn, they had just picked up 17 year old Valentina Utochenko, the sole survivor of one of the most mysterious backpacking disasters of all time; one which would come to be known as the infamous Khamar Daban incident.
