The bass guitar on Funkadelic's "Freak of the Week" was played by Jeff Bunn. He shared bass duties with Lige Curry during the 1980 Gloryhallastoopid tour. Bunn later became the bassist for the P-Funk All-Stars during the Dope Dogs/Smell My Finger tours from 1992 to 1994.
The guitarists who played on Funkadelic's "Freak of the Week" are Dewayne McKnight and Gary Shider. Dewayne McKnight, also known as "Blackbyrd", co-wrote the track and contributed guitar work, while Gary Shider also played guitar on the song. Additionally, the song credits William Collins for guitar as well.
The female background vocalists on Funkadelic's "Freak of the Week" include Jessica Cleaves, Dawn Silva, and Jeanette McGruder.
"Uncle Jam Wants You" is an album by the American funk rock band Funkadelic, released in 1979. It is known for its strong funk sound, its politically charged themes, and its iconic album cover.
The album title is a clear reference to the famous "Uncle Sam Wants You!" US Army recruitment posters.
The album is considered a more militant continuation of the themes explored in Funkadelic's previous album, "One Nation Under a Groove". While "One Nation Under a Groove" imagined a utopian "Funkadelia," "Uncle Jam Wants You" encourages listeners to embrace funk and "rescue dance music from the blahs".
George Clinton, the mastermind behind Funkadelic, adopts the persona of "Uncle Jam" on the album, a "funk drill sergeant" urging people to join his "army" and dance.
The album, particularly the hit single "(Not Just) Knee Deep," had a profound influence on the West Coast hip-hop scene and groups like Uncle Jamm's Army.
In short, "Uncle Jam Wants You" is a call to join the "army" of funk, to embrace the music and let it move you, all while referencing the iconic American recruitment campaign and promoting a sense of unity and liberation through funk music.
