There are hundreds of thousands of them. For decades, waves of migrants from around the world – both legal and illegal – have poured into the United States, leaving their homes behind. To them, America represented the bright hope of freedom and prosperity: the so-called ‘American Dream’.

But Donald Trump’s new immigration policy has disrupted the lives of those already in the US and crushed the hopes of many still trying to get there. CBP One, the app that once allowed migrants to legally apply for asylum, was shut down after Trump returned to power.

Even those who’ve lived in the US for decades now face deportation for the smallest infraction. Most can’t return to their home countries – bridges have been burned, and they have no money to go back. They end up in overcrowded shelters in Mexico, slowly coming to grips with a hard truth: giving up their roots and homeland for a chance at a better life in America was just a pipedream.
