Interview with Andrew Mckenzie - Pastor Derek Reimer's Lawyer

Derek Reimer has been in jail for 49 days. He had his day in court yesterday. In it, his lawyer made Charter arguments about how his arrest for "breach" of his house arrest conditions was unconstitutional.

Remember, Derek was arrested for stopping to address a crowd of supporters outside his last court date over a month ago.

The decision on this latest hearing will not be until July 8th - so he'll be in jail until at least then. This situation is truly outrageous. That he could be arrested for addressing his supporters - and denied bail - and be in jail for 49 days is the epitome of injustice.

Meanwhile, his wife and 7 month old son are waiting for him at home.

Below is an interview with his lawyer, Andrew Mckenzie discussing what happened today, and what to expect next.

Derek Reimer is a courageous Pastor from Alberta who was criminally arrested and charged for protesting Drag Queen Story events at many Calgary Public libraries. He was arrested again May 8, 2025, and inexplicably- he was been denied bail, and has been in jail since then, 49 days later!

Being denied bail is an unusual outcome, especially for a non-violent offender like Pastor Derek.

Today, I have an exciting interview with his wife Mona Reimer and his lawyer, Andrew McKenzie. Mona tells me she faithfully protested outside of Derek's remand centre in Calgary with many other protestors, and some very exciting things started happening! Seemingly because they were afraid of the positive impacts these protests were happening on the other inmates, they shipped Derek off to Edmonton, over three hours away. Now it's harder than ever for her to visit Derek in person.

This is the longest stretch to date Derek has been in jail. All of this stems from protesting drag-time story events at Calgary Public libraries geared to children, and related encounters like peacefully sharing his views with a library manager.

With all the brazen home invasions, car-jackings, and other violence we're seeing in Canada - and the easy bail given to thugs almost daily, it boggles my mind that Derek was denied bail.

Derek's has been unable to work while in jail, and must raise money to pay for legal fees.
