What Zohran Mamdani’s ‘Freeze the Rent’ Actually Means for America’s Largest City

We don’t have to wait for Zohran Mamdani to become mayor of America’s largest city to see what ‘Freeze the Rent’ actually looks like.

Last night, New York Democrats elected Zohran Mamdani, a Ugandan-born, self-professed democratic socialist as their candidate for mayor.
One of his most controversial policies: “Freezing the Rent” for rent-stabilized tenants

Mamdani doesn’t need to become Mayor of America’s largest city for us to know what will happen next:

Owners of rent-stabilized properties in the Bronx lose an average of $120 per month on each apartment, resulting in 200,000 severely run-down apartment units, according to Mark Willis, a senior policy fellow at NYU’s Furman Center on Real Estate.

The 2023 New York Housing and Vacancy Survey from the Census Bureau reported more rodents, mold, leaks, and heating failures in rent-stabilized buildings than ones with market rates.

What do you think? Are rent freezes the only way to make living more affordable in the Big Apple?
