Wolfs Temptation

The Wolf (The Howling Wolf)
This June 25th is a day commemorating the tragic war that occurred in our country.
Just two years after liberation from Japanese colonial rule, on June 25, 1950, a war broke out when the communist regime attacked the democratic regime. This war resulted in a ceasefire that divided North and South, separating our people along ideological lines, a division that persists to this day.
I hope all wars on Earth disappear, regardless of the reasons.
Then and now, human history has always deeply needed fair and righteous leaders.
With this thought, I want to draw a wolf, envisioning the image of a true man.
Wolves once thrived and reproduced across the globe.
Known for their intelligence and strong social bonds characteristic of the canine family, wolves hunt cooperatively. From ancient times, they competed with humans for food, and their predation of livestock ultimately led them toward extinction. However, I know considerable efforts are currently being made to restore their populations.
Wolves have always been intertwined with human history.
They were feared but also became beloved companions. Indeed, the domesticated dog, our friendly companion today, traces its lineage back to wolves.
Perhaps that's why various myths and legends involving wolves have emerged in cultures worldwide. Wolves have historically inspired fear, featuring prominently in stories of werewolves, wolves in sheep’s clothing, or cunning wolves deceiving little girls. These tales highlight the wolf's intelligent and strategic nature.
In Roman legend, the twin brothers who founded Rome were said to have been suckled by a she-wolf. Mongolians claim descent from the Blue Wolf.
Like foxes, wolves are animals often misunderstood and unjustly maligned, likely due to their longstanding coexistence with humans.
Only after humans recklessly hunted wolves to the brink of extinction did serious research begin, uncovering previously unknown aspects of wolf life and dispelling negative stereotypes.
Wolf packs operate with strict order, typically led by a dominant male wolf. The leader keenly understands the strengths and weaknesses of pack members, actively protecting and guiding the group.
The alpha male wolf is known for his loyalty, partnering with one female wolf for life, raising their offspring together—a truly devoted "macho" figure.
Ernest Seton's book, "King Lobo," left a deep impression on me during my childhood. Lobo was an extraordinary and magnificent wolf.
If women are symbolized as foxes, men are often represented by wolves.
Men particularly admire this noble aspect of wolves.
Interestingly, Korea has relatively few myths or legends about such noble wolves.
Historically, the Korean Peninsula was famously the land of tigers, so wolves naturally faced competition, leading to their reduced numbers. This explains the scarcity of wolf-related stories here.
Yet, there are stories of wolf packs existing in regions without tigers. My father once mentioned having seen wolf pups during his childhood.
The character "Lang" (狼) in this painting is the Chinese character for wolf. I chose it for its visual elegance.

May meaningful things in your life harmoniously blend into this painting.
May this wolf protect you and your family's safety.
A truly Korean gift.
