You Will Know Them By Their Fruit | Catholic Daily Readings | June 25, 2025
Catholic Daily Readings for June 25, 2025 - Wednesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time
We've all met people whose words and actions exist in completely different universes. They sound impressive, look the part, say all the right things. Yet something feels off because their fruit tells a different story than their leaves.
Jesus warns us about this with surgical precision: "By their fruit you will recognize them." This isn't about perfection—it's about patterns. What someone consistently produces when nobody's watching, when pressure's on, when their true character gets tested by uncontrollable circumstances.
Abraham faced this exact test. After God promised descendants as numerous as stars, years passed with no children. Sarah remained barren. The promise seemed increasingly impossible. Abraham had every reason to doubt, hedge his bets, create backup plans.
Yet Abraham believed the Lord, and God credited it to him as righteousness. This wasn't emotional optimism but character-level trust that produced specific fruit: unwavering faith despite contradictory circumstances.
False prophets are dangerous because they understand presentation without transformation. They wear sheep's clothing while harboring predatory intentions. They've mastered religious vocabulary without submitting to spiritual reality.
Words can lie, appearances deceive, but fruit reveals the root system actually feeding someone's life. What consistently comes out when they're frustrated? How do they treat people who can't benefit them? What happens to principles when they become costly?
The fruit test helps us distinguish impressive presentation from authentic transformation. We live in a culture of curated social media profiles, polished public images, practiced religious performance.
Abraham's story reminds us that God's character produces covenant-keeping fruit across impossible circumstances and inexplicable timing. His promises don't depend on our ability to understand, execute, or even believe them consistently.
