June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation. This event happened two and a half years after President Lincoln made the original proclamation on January 1, 1863.

FIVE REASONS TO CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH

1. IT OPENS THE DOOR TO RACIAL RECONCILIATION WITHIN THE BODY OF CHRIST.
Gal 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”

2. TO REMEMBER OUR HISTORY:
Romans 15:4 “For everything that is written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”

3. TO CELEBRATE WITH THOSE WHO ARE CELEBRATING
Romans 12:18 “Rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn.”

4. BECAUSE STORY OF FREEDOM MIRRORS OUR SALVATION STORY
Romans 8:20-21 “When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!”

5. BECAUSE JUNETEENTH IS A REMINDER OF WHY WE NEED TO SHARE THE HOPE OF THE GOSPEL.
Romans 10:14-15 “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? …As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
