The assassination of president John F. Kennedy has given rise to many speculations concerning whom the assassin may be, who if anyone commissioned the assassination and why. While the official assassin is Lee Harvey Oswald, others were also suspected of being involved. According to the official narrative, Oswald was a communist defector who opposed the Catholic Democrat, JFK. However, this does not square with violent far right opposition to JFK—which was rife in Dallas at the time—on the pretext he was lenient toward communist leaders and perhaps a closet communist himself. More critical than who shot the president is the significance of the assassination. What policies or interests were behind what was clearly a political assassination that changed the course of history?
