20. Preview of Subchapters and Conclusion | Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril (حفظه الله)

In this closing introduction to Kitāb At-Tawḥīd from Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, The Shaykh (حفظه الله) outlines key theological issues that will be covered, particularly the Speech of Allāh (Kalām Allāh) and its implications. This topic — debated historically since the time of Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal — remains a foundational issue in Islamic theology. The Shaykh (حفظه الله) emphasizes that misunderstanding this leads to serious deviation, especially concerning whether the Qur’ān is created or is the uncreated Word of Allāh subḥānahu wa taʿālā.

He references specific subchapters that Imām al-Bukhārī rahimahullāh included to affirm the sound understanding of the Salaf, such as chapters on Allāh speaking to the Prophets and the people of Paradise. The Shaykh (حفظه الله) explains that attributes like anger, mercy, love, descent, and pleasure are known as As-Sifāt al-Ikhtiyāriyyah — attributes of choice — and will be unpacked in this study, with references to detailed works by Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullāh.

He also introduces the crucial subject of Khalq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād — the creation of human actions — citing the verse:

“While Allāh created you and that which you do” (Surat As-Sāffāt, verse 96).

Al-Bukhārī addressed this both in Kitāb At-Tawḥīd and in a separate book titled Khalq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād, wherein he affirms that the Qur’ān is uncreated, and that Allāh is the Creator of all actions. This book also contains refutations of the Jahmiyyah and the Muʿtazilah, reinforcing that al-Bukhārī was not merely a collector of ḥadīth, but a leader in ʿAqīdah.

The Shaykh ends by reminding listeners that these foundational issues are critical for understanding the rest of the book, and thus must be grasped before progressing into the subchapters. More will be covered in the next session, In shā’ Allāh.
