13. Gravity of Shirk and Purpose of Creation | Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril (حفظه الله)

The Shaykh (حفظه الله) delivers a powerful reminder on the serious consequences of flaws in Tawḥīd. Associating partners with Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is the one sin that will never be forgiven if not repented from, as Allah says: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him…” (Surat An-Nisā’, verse 48). The one who commits shirk has been forbidden Paradise and his final abode is the Hellfire (Surat Al-Mā'idah, verse 72). Even the righteous deeds of a person who falls into shirk become null and void, as stated in (Surat Az-Zumar, verse 65): “Your work would surely become worthless...”

In the context of this study, especially regarding Allah’s Names and Attributes (Asmā’ wa Ṣifāt), the Shaykh reminds us of the verse (Surat Al-A‘rāf, verse 180): “And to Allah belong the best names, so call upon Him by them…” Those who distort or deviate in the understanding of His Names will be held accountable.

The Shaykh then reflects on the purpose of life—we were created, sustained, and endowed with faculties of hearing, sight, and reason for the sole purpose of worshipping Allah through Tawḥīd. Those who fail to do so are described by Allah as “worse than cattle” (Surat Al-A‘rāf, verse 179). Finally, the rhetorical question in (Surat Al-Mu’minūn, verse 115): “Did you think We created you in vain?” is a stern reminder that life has meaning, and that meaning begins and ends with the correct understanding of Tawḥīd.
