Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril (حفظه الله) explains that Imām Al-Bukhāri رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ structured Kitāb At-Tawḥīd primarily around Al-Asmā’ was-Sifāt — the Names and Attributes of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى — because of the widespread denial of these attributes by groups like the Jahmiyyah during his time. A unique feature of Al-Bukhāri’s approach in Sahīh Al-Bukhāri is that he does not name the individuals or sects he is refuting directly; instead, he responds through clear Qur’ānic verses and authentic Hadīth, allowing the truth to speak for itself. The Shaykh highlights that while Al-Bukhāri chose a subtle method in this chapter, he did explicitly name and refute innovators in his other works. In Kitāb At-Tawḥīd, many of the subheadings (Bāb) include both verses from the Qur’ān and Hadīth to show that those who reject the Ahād (solitary reports) in matters of ‘Aqīdah are not only denying the Sunnah but also contradicting the Qur’ān. This chapter serves as a comprehensive refutation not only of the Jahmiyyah but also other deviant sects such as the Mushabbihah (those who liken Allah to creation) and the Mu‘attilah (those who negate or distort Allah’s Attributes). The balance, subtlety, and depth of Al-Bukhāri’s method demonstrate his immense knowledge and unwavering commitment to the creed of the Salaf.
