6. Al-Bukhāri's Status and Commentaries on Sahīh Al-Bukhāri | Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril (حفظه الله)

Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril (حفظه الله) emphasizes that Imām Al-Bukhāri رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ was not only a master of Hadīth but also an Imām upon the path of the Salaf, especially in matters of Al-Asmā’ was-Sifāt (Allah’s Names and Attributes). His book, Sahīh Al-Bukhāri, holds a unique and elevated status in Islamic scholarship, proven by the vast number of commentaries written on it — over 80 as recorded in Kashf ad-Dunūn, though the true number is likely far greater. These commentaries came from scholars of all four major Madhāhib and from a wide spectrum of theological backgrounds — some adhering to the creed of the Salaf, others influenced by Ash‘arī or mixed ideologies. While some scholars made innocent errors, others deliberately distorted the meanings to fit their theological leanings. A common deviation included rejecting authentic narrations on the basis that they are Ahād (solitary reports) and therefore supposedly inadmissible in matters of ‘Aqīdah. The Shaykh warns against such approaches and praises Fath Al-Bārī by Ibn Rajab رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ as one of the finest explanations of Sahīh Al-Bukhāri in line with the Salaf’s methodology — though incomplete, its adherence to the truth and clarity in affirming the divine attributes makes it stand out.
