Venue:- Headingley Leeds London. Day Three.
The First Match of Five Match Test series 2025 between India and England is underway at Headingley Leeds in London.This match is being played from 20th June to 24th June 2025. In this match England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first.
On Day 3 the match saw a dramatic turn of events with England seizing control through a combination of resilient batting and exceptional bowling. The match is evenly poised at the moment.
India in their first innings were bowled out after pilling up huge total of 471 runs in 113 overs. In reply England gave a befitting reply and managed to score 465 runs in 100.4 overs and conceeded nominal lead of 6 runs only in first innings. At stupms on day three india were 90 runs for the loss of two wickets and leading by 96 runs with eight wickts remaining.
England started the day three from overnight score of 209 runs for the loss of 3 wickets still trailing India by 262 runs. Their overnight batsmen Ollie Pope not out on 100 runs and Harry Brook batting on zero started the day with caution and aggression.
But India started well with Ollie Pope perishing for 106 after adding only six runs to his overnight score.Ollie Pope anchored the innings with resilient 106 runs.Prasidh Krishna ended Ollie Pope’s serene masterpiece caught by Rishabh Panth behind the wickets.
Ollie Pope was fourth wicket to fall after contributing magnificient 106 runs from 137 balls hitting 14 fours. England at this stage were 225 runs for the loss of four wickets.
Then Mohammed Siraj removed Ben Stokes caught by Rishabh Panth after making 20 runs only. England at this stage were 276 for 5 wickets still trailing by 195 runs and it looked that India will get a substantial lead.
But England capitalized heavily on India’s sloppy fielding with multiple dropped chances that proved costly.Then Harry Brook with Jamie Smith added 73 runs from 88 balls for the sixth wicket and consolidated the innings.
Jamie Smith contributed quickfire 40 runs from 52 balls hitting 5 fours and one six. He was caught brilliantly by Sai Sudharshan in partnership with Ravindra Jadeja at the boundry line of the bowling of Prasidh Krishna.
Harry Brook continued his onslaught and added crucial 49 runs with Chris Woakes from 48 balls for the seventh wicket. Harry Brook made aggressive, inventive and sprinkled 99 runs laden with luck of survival on a no ball and two dropped catches. Brook had been dismissed off a no-ball before he had scored and was also dropped on 46 and again on 82.
The Yorkshire born batter made India pay for dropped catches with Jaiswal dropping him at fourth slip when he was on 82 for his third lifeline. It was Jaiswal's third dropped catch and India's fifth in the innings.
Harry Brook looked set for a big score and was out after scoring 99 runs from 112 balls hitting 11 fours and 2 sixes.Prasidh Krishna got his wicket caught by Shardul Thakur stationed at the boundary rope.Harry Brook became the 14th Englishman to be dismissed on 99 in a Test.
Then lower order batsmen Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse frustrated the Indan bowlers and added vital 55 runs from 44 balls only which reduced the lead marginally.
With India getting desperate Jasprit Bumrah was brought back into the attack. He then cleaned up the tail by dismissing Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue with deliveries that crashed into the stumps.
Chris Woakes made crucial 38 runs and Josh Tongue contributed valuable 11 runs. Brydon Carse was bold by Mohammed Siraj after contributing crucial 22 runs. Shoaib Bashir remained not out on 1 run.
The lower order of England added vital runs to close the gap. India lost their last five wickets for 24 runs only but England’s lower order added 189 runs.
England were all out at the score of 465 runs in 100.5 overs and conceeded lead of only 6 runs. With this England is back into the game and the match is evenly poised.
For india Jasprit Bumrah bowled his heart out and completed a five-wicket haul. He could have easily got more than this but India's pace spearhead saw four catches dropped off his bowling.
But sober and soft hearted legendry fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah told in an Interview that nobody drops catches purposefully.Sometimes the cold makes it difficult to catch.I try not to let it affect me and move forward quickly. Jasprit Bumrah became the first Asian bowler to reach 150 Test scalps in SENA countries
Prasidh Krishna bowled also well and took three wickets. Mohammed Siraj took 2 wickets.
In India’s second innings England struck early by taking the wicket of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal who scored a century in the first innings. He was caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith of the bowling of Brydon Carse and made only 4 runs.
Sai Sudharsan walked in who was dismissed for a duck in the first innings and played patiently in gloomy conditions.He added crucial 66 runs from 106 balls for the second wicket with other opener KL Rahul and consolidated the innings.
But then England skipper Ben Stokes just as in the first innings removed Sai Sudharsan, when the Indian batter clipped an inswinging delivery to short midwicket where Zak Crawley took a sharp catch. He contibeted 30 runs from 48 balls.
Then play was stopped due to rain which continued till the day end and paly was called off early for third day. KL Rahul offered steady resistance at the crease and is unbeaten on 47 runs with skipper Shubman Gill not out on 6 runs.
At stumps on day three India reached score of 90 runs for the loss of 2 wickets and holding a 96 run lead.
