Catholic Daily Readings for June 24, 2025 - Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

Most people struggle with finding their purpose in life, wondering if they're making any real difference. Then there's John the Baptist—whose life calling was announced before he was even born, whose mission was declared while still in the womb.

But knowing your purpose doesn't make living it easier. Sometimes the clearer your calling, the more uncomfortable your life becomes. John shows us that authentic purpose often requires unconventional choices and the courage to be different.

The Bible teaches that John was called from the womb, named by God before birth. This wasn't accidental purpose discovered through trial and error—this was divine assignment from the very beginning. Yet John's entire calling was to point away from himself toward Jesus Christ.

Today's psalm celebrates how we are "wonderfully made"—not mass-produced or randomly assembled, but knit together with specific design. Most of us feel more accidentally made than wonderfully made, comparing ourselves to others instead of embracing our unique calling.

John grew up in the wilderness, ate locusts, wore camel hair, and preached uncomfortable truths. By normal standards he was strange, but he was completely comfortable being exactly who God made him to be. Authenticity mattered more than approval.

When neighbors wanted to name the baby after his father, Zechariah wrote "His name is John." This child would carry his own identity. The moment Zechariah affirmed John's unique calling, supernatural speech and blessing were released.

Your purpose might not require literal wilderness living, but probably some unconventional choices. The things that make you effective for God's kingdom often make you different by world's standards.

We all share the same fundamental calling: prepare the way for Jesus in our corner of the world, with our specific gifts, in our unique circumstances.
