When Jesus condemned Sola Scriptura

The Sadducees, Torah-only advocates, predated sola scriptura, rejecting resurrection since it wasn’t in the five books of Moses. Jesus condemned their 'Bible alone' theology. In Matthew 22:29, he called them out: “You’re wrong! You don’t know the Scriptures or God’s power.” He pointed to Exodus 3:6 — God’s living bond with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — to prove the dead rise, exposing their error.Jesus turned to the Pharisees, in Matthew 23:2-3, saying, “They sit in Moses’ seat — obey their words,” endorsing their loyalty to oral tradition, which included teachings beyond the written text. Despite criticising their hypocrisy — like heavy legalism — he valued their authority over the Sadducees’ rigid stance. This undermines Protestant dogma, with Jesus endorsing tradition and authority over 'Scripture alone'.
