Namibia is positioning itself as a potential green hydrogen superpower, leveraging its exceptional natural resources of intense solar radiation and consistent coastal winds. The country has launched Africa's first commercial green hydrogen production facility, the Daures Green Hydrogen Village, while approving the massive $10 billion Hyphen Hydrogen Energy project to produce 350,000 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030. Rather than simply exporting raw resources, Namibia has developed a comprehensive strategy emphasizing domestic value addition and skills development. International partnerships, particularly with Germany and the EU, have emerged following global energy security concerns, with Namibia insisting on local ownership stakes and skills transfer. For this nation of 2.5 million people traditionally dependent on mining, green hydrogen represents an opportunity for economic diversification that could add $6 billion to GDP and create 200,000 jobs by 2040. However, challenges remain regarding water usage, environmental impact, and hydrogen transportation logistics.
