Sermon on the Lords Prayer - Luke 11:1-4 - Lords Day June 22nd, 2025 = Trinity Reformed Church

We must come in faith. We must seek Gods grace. The church grows inwardly as we use the means of grace. The church grows as we preach the gospel of the kingdom.

Prayer for practical pardon: verse 4. Forgive us our sins. It is simple and a practical request for God to forgive us of our sins. We are still sinners. We can go directly to God.. We have a mediator Jesus Christ that makes it possible for us to pray this prayer. As we ask for forgiveness, we will be forgiven. We can have confidence and assurance that we can have forgiveness. Would Christ put these words in our mouth if it was not possible "Spurgeon". Forgiveness is absolutely essential. Eph 1:7, Col 1:14. Without forgiveness there is no salvation... Without God there is no peace. We can't call upon God in this prayer without forgiveness. Sin is a problem. Acts 5:31. Romans 3:10. Rom 3:19-20, Psa 51:5, Eph 2:1, Mat 15:19, Jer 17:19, Gen 6, James 3:8, 1 John 3:4, Eph 6:1, Isa 1:18. Heb 10:3-4, Prov 21:4, 2 Peter 2:14, Rev 18:5

Sin is like a debt (v4) that we owe to God and it must be paid. The debt we owe is un-payable. It is an eternal debt. Man who does not have Christ will spend eternity in hell and will never pay off their debt. The one who pays the debt must be God and man. For those who cry out for forgiveness He completely washing them of their sins. He paid the debt. Once for all. The judicial act removes the debt but not the sin. Even as Christians we still sin. Like the prayer for physical provision we come to the prayer of practical pardon. We sin against God daily. These sins have been dealt with but sin in our walk will have a chilling effect on our relationship with God. We stand positionally righteous but practically we are still a terrible scripture. Justification is a one time event. Roman 8 who can bring a charge against Gods elect?

Practical Pardon: we need to daily ask forgiveness because our sin damages our relationship with Him. In Psalm 51:14 David is praying for forgiveness. Psalm 51:6-8 - He has salvation but because of his sin he is asking for forgiveness and restore the joy of your salvation. Not restore salvation (v8). 1 John 1:4. John 13 He who is washed needs only his feet cleaned. You are already clean because of the Word I have spoken to you. Jesus is saying you are already judicially clean but they still need forgiveness (their feet get dirty). As you come to Him He will wash your feet.

What we are learning is the benefits for us with this prayer. We have been completely washed by the blood of Christ but we need our feet cleaned daily. Don't let your sins weigh on you so much that you flee from God. This prayer acknowledges that you can

Psalms 51:8 (NKJV) Make me hear joy and gladness, [That] the bones You have broken may rejoice.

Deuteronomy 21:8 (NKJV) ‘Provide atonement, O LORD, for Your people Israel, whom You have redeemed, and do not lay innocent blood to the charge of Your people Israel.’ And atonement shall be provided on their behalf for the blood.

Ephesians 1:7 (NKJV) In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Colossians 1:14 (NKJV) in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Luke 11:1-4 (NKJV) 1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, [that] one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as [it is] in heaven. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”
